During 2020 Ann Rutter & Sara Sueberling at Electric Quilt and I have been working on revising my indexes to pieced quilt patterns.
The published index started in 1979 with typed, xeroxed pages bound in a notebook.

Then Penny McMorris at Electric Quilt converted it to a PC compatible digital program BlockBase with digital drawings and the ability to draw any of the patterns any size.
That was a long time ago and computer operating systems change over the years so it became obsolete and out of print (so to speak.)
Obsolete
Last year Ann wondered if we could re-work the digital program to make it operate in both MAC and PC systems.
Up-to-Date
Let's do, says I. We added a bunch of new blocks that had been haunting me because they weren't in there in the first place. Lots of Laura Wheeler/Alice Brooks designs that I'd missed.
Alice Brooks, Bow Knot, 1940
I redrew them to clarify Alice's sometimes obscure seam lines.
Ann and Sara added them and redrew all the blocks.
Then, since we had such lovely new drawings, why not publish a new book? So Sara laid it out.

The third edition of the book Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Patterns.
And YES---the program is MAC compatible.

Exciting news! I use the Encyclopedia weekly and EQ almost as frequently. I will buy both new versions.

ReplyDeleteI know you use it---hope you like the new versions.
I think this is the bestest news that's come out of this whole stinking dumpster fire year so far!!! WoooHOOOO!! I did see an ad in the most recent Love of Quilting(?) announcing it was coming, but no date...
ReplyDeleteIn those old Quilter's Newsletter magazines I was lucky enough to score, there were ads for an encyclopedia you wrote that grew to 3-4 volumes over a few years. I was wondering if they were combined to the one large encyclopedia or if I needed to keep an eye out for them at garage/estate sales or other used book sources. I'm glad I don't - my shelves are... past stuffed.
Looking forward to the print and MAC versions - woohoo!
ReplyDeleteThis will be wonderful! I held up buying when you mentioned some time ago that a new volume was in the works. I am just learning to design with EQ so I will look forward to it.
ReplyDeleteIt's probably too late to add the block from my great grandmother's quilt. You could say it is a very different Jacob's Ladder. Or, you could call it Caroline's Ladder or Mississippi Ladder. http://www.factsfacts.com/quilts/GibbsQuilt.htm
ReplyDeleteYay for the MAC version!!
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to this and the election! The best events of 2020.
ReplyDeleteOoh very exciting indeed!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the update and for making it Mac compatible. I have used both block base and the printed book. The computer program is helpful for doing actual quilting and design, but I have enjoyed looking at the Encyclopedia and all the notes, plus all the names for the same block. Now I know that Churn Dash is the same as "Ludlow's Favorites." The new book looks fabulous.
ReplyDeleteI'm so excited. I have three last book, had block base too. Looking forward to these!
ReplyDeleteOh goody! I can't wait. Blockbase was my "go to" program to design my quilts. I love that I could make the block any size I needed and have either the templates or rotary cutting directions and preview the blocks in a quilt. My laptop just refused to find the cd when I tried to load it. Thank you Miz Barbara and all the ladies who are working on it. ohsirius7 at hotmail.com
ReplyDeleteI am excited it is so close to being here! They are my "go to" books/program! Addison wants her own copy, too! ;)
ReplyDeleteSo so happy this will finally be available for us Mac people!
ReplyDeleteThank you.
This is wonderful! Can’t wait to get my copy. One of my most used references! Congrats!!
ReplyDeleteI loved using BlockBase and didn't realize it wasn't Mac compatible when I bought a new computer. Seems like I have been waiting forever to use it again. I'm thrilled to learn the new version is coming soon. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteThis is wonderful news! I know it was a lot of work for all of you, and appreciate that you spent all this time doing it. Thank you!
