Washington Earthquake

Dolley Madison to her sister, December 22, 1811:

"We had another shock of Earth Quake on Wednesday Night & Thursday Morg."

The Lady President felt the aftershocks of the New Madrid earthquake south of Saint Louis, which was hundreds of miles away.

Aftershocks went on through March, 1812.

I can imagine how the ladies felt in those days.
That is something I never think about in RI, but some people felt the one from VA, I never noticed, lol.

I love Dolly, okay her cakes too but I really mean the A&E special about her several years ago.
After living in Cape Girardeau just about 120 miles from St. Louis, I have felt many New Madrid small tremmor earth quakes. It must have been really strange and scary in Dolly's day to have felt the aftershocks of an earth quake from the western frontier. How sur-real.
