Hospital Sketches Show: New England Quilt Museum

Hospital Sketches by Roseanne Smith, 2019-2022

About three years ago New England Quilt Museum curator Pamela Weeks and I discussed hanging a 2020 show of recent applique quilts made from my Block of the Month series called Hospital Sketches

Our plans went awry.

But, three years later: It's opening soon! And here's a preview of “Hospital Sketches: Applique Quilts Inspired by Civil War Healthcare Workers."

Block 1, Periwinkle Wreath by Rebecca Schenkenburger

The show will be up from July 20th until October 1st. I am scheduled to speak there on Saturday, September 10th (barring further train wrecks.)

"Only One Bird" by Patt Seitas

7" x 7", 36 pages

I published a little catalog at Blurb books, which you can buy from Blurb.com or look for it in the museum's shop. Here's a link to Blurb print-on-demand, where you can see a preview:

Big Yellow by Georgann Eglinski

There were dozens of terrific quilts made from the pattern but we could only fit a few in the gallery. I picked those with a variety of looks, borders and sets.

Julee Prose
The catalog has pictures of many quilts and blocks
that are not in the show, like Julee's.

"Gratitude" by Becky Brown
Why it's called "Gratitude" from the catalog:

Denniele Bohannon's "Sprouts" a simpler, smaller version is
also on view. Fabulous machine quilting
by Sue Daurio.

Karen Doer Martin

The extra two years gave sometime to get those tops quilted and bound.

Patterns and stories about hospital workers during the Civil War were published on my CivilWarQuilts blog in 2019. You can also use the catalog for patterns. There's a 7 x 7" picture of each block that you can photocopy.

Here's a link to the original pattern posts and the stories, which became sadly relevant during the recent pandemic as nurses and doctors died while caring for patients.

And you can buy the nine patterns to print yourself at my Etsy shop:

Can't wait to see Matt Macomber's in real life.

And we have a long neglected Facebook group which you can ask to join to see what's happening.
