Fussy Cutting Phenomena

Kansas Sunflower
By QuiltingGammy

My Grandmother's Choice blog, a free pattern every week to recall the fight for women's rights, has created a fussy-cutting phenomenom. Fussy-cutting is the term we use for centering a fabric motif in the patchwork.

It's not a new idea. Here's a mid-19th-century silk quilt from the Kentucky Quilt Project with a focus on politician Henry Clay's portrait .

Jinny Beyer has been doing amazing things with careful cutting and kaleidoscopes for years.

Paula Nadelstern has taken the idea in a whole new direction.

  9. I really love how the fabric can make the block and a nice idea to try with fabrics we like and want to show off the prints.

  10. It is a pleasure to test sew the blocks and then wait to see what wonderful things you all do! Having the Flickr site is a great way to post our pictures to share and learn from each other.

I've been fussy cutting for decades, even when suitable fabrics were hard to find. Now we have a gold mine of about any fabrics we could possible want.

Thanks to all of you for posting your pictures on Flickr for our on-going quilt show. I especially admire those of you who are making small blocks. If you are making 2 blocks each week, well, you are having double fun!

It's not too late to join us!

    Happy sewing everyone!

  11. What a great surprise today! Thank you for another fabulous block of the week project! The talent shown week after week is incredible and we all learn from each other. I agree with Becky, it is not too late to join this wonderful group and meet everyone! The flicker show and tell weekly is so inspiring that many of us are making 2 blocks a week and loving it! Thank you Barbara!
