This might make a good hand-piecing project.
I do have a lot of 2" squares
Maybe a Trip Around the World
Or one of these
But then again there is so much that can go wrong...
Miscounting
Looks like she just gave up.
Probably in everybody's best interests.
Directionality, maybe
Or maybe her greens faded to yellow.
It's hard to analyze what went wrong here.
Perhaps working in four squares and a little miscalculation in the
final setting.
It took a while to figure out what happened here.
Not that I have it completely figured out.
Stretching squares cut on the bias?
Not a unique problem.
Maybe I should adapt a more devil-may-care attitude.
From the Pat Nickols collection at the Mingei Museum
But you see, I prefer the ones that "went wrong"--I think they are splendid and "one of a kind"...they make you stop and look ( well, gape really lol). thanks for sharing...
ReplyDeletehugs, Julierose
I love all of them!
ReplyDeleteI made one I call A Journey Through Time. Each patterned fabric is different, the solid domestic squares each have the name and birth & death dates of the women in my family tree as I have been doing genealogy for many years. Here's links to my blog posts in case you are interested.

I thoroughly enjoy your blog, thanks so much!
I too find the more perfect ones are pretty, but it's the "bad" ones that hold my interest. I wonder what the makers were thinking while they pondered how to make it work, or sort of work, or decided that if they did a bad enough job, the expectations of others would be lowered to match their interest in quilting.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful post! I am with Becky, I love them all. I have seen Pat's before and it is one of my favorites. I think my mother wanted to name me "Wonky" but settled on the more normal, "Wendy". I believe she is still regretting that decision. I am far from "normal". Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteA straight setting of the final quilt was the inspiration for a quilt along by Temecula Quilt Company.

It's so interesting to see all these quilts with their so called imperfections--maybe they were the forerunners to improvisational quilting! Maybe not...
Those last three 'skewy' quilts are wonderful....and so are the ones that lost their way--"Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!"
ReplyDeleteOh that very last one - brilliant!
ReplyDeleteMaybe these are ads for the design 'floor' if not a design wall. But the real lesson here is that all that stress to make it perfect and 'heirloom' quality comes to naught if it doesn't survive the decades - these are great suvivors.
ReplyDeleteSo much fun looking at these. As others have said, the mistakes are more interesting and entertaining than the perfects. Your posts are always perfectly entertaining!
ReplyDeleteAnyone is just beautiful.Love them all.
ReplyDeleteyes to devil may care attitude !!
