Past Perfect: Kathie Ratcliffe

Star of Bethlehem by Kathie Ratcliffe
Nine Patch Studio.
About 8 inches square.

Oak Leaf
9-1/4" x 9-1/4"

This month's Past Perfect post features miniaturist Kathie Ratcliffe.

a John Hewson miniature quilt.

Wild Goose Chase, 8" square

Kathie lives in Virginia where she makes miniature quilts inspired, as she writes,
"by traditional 19th century designs. Each miniature quilt captures the essence of an actual 19th century American pieced quilt or quilt pattern. .... I am drawn to the geometric designs and rich colors of early pieced quilts and often add my 21st century spin. Some works are quiet and elegant, others boldly abstract and surprisingly contemporary. All share a connection with the most dynamic and fascinating century in American quilting."
Ohio Star

I am impressed by the tiny Stars of Bethlehem, which are usually 8". I can recognize
her source on some of these.

11-1/2" x 11-1/2"

She sells the small quilts at her website

She'll be opening her Nine Patch Studio for the Waterford Virginia Homes Tour & Crafts Exhibit on
October 6-8, 2017

  3. The colors! So vibrant they might be almost overwhelming in a full sized quilt. Gorgeous work. Thanks for showing us.

  4. Amazing piecework! What a wonderful way to showcase the ingenuity of early American quilters. Kathie is a treasure and helps us see how vital and relevant this art form is. I am struck by how modern and daring these compositions are. Bravo for profiling her!!

  6. Wow, that's some tiny work. I'll try to keep these in mind next time I'm grousing about how hard it is to fluff a large quilt around on the sewing machine. What's as amazing as Kathie's work is that she finds fabrics of suitable scale. If I weren't told they are 8" square, there's not much about the fabrics that give it away.
