Moda Friendship Quilt Along Day 1




Friendship Ala Moda


Party Like It's 1842!

We're making a friendship quilt here at Moda. You'll recognize the style---blocks in a sampler of patterns, each with the maker's signature. People call them album quilts or signature quilts too. They've been a format for social networking since the 1840s.

Here's the agenda for the Quilt Along.

1.) Quilt Patterns 

You get a free pattern for a block from all the Moda designers (3 a day)

They'll be posting sometime on February 18th.

Between now and March 4 you will get 28 different patterns for 9" blocks.




Here's the block we've designed for me.
It's a version of flying geese with a big spot for a signature or inscription.


I made it up in some grays and pinkish reds from my Morris Apprentice collection of reproduction William Morris Company prints. I fussy-cut a square out of the Eden print for the corners.

It finishes to 9" square. The instructions will show you a clever way to make these strip-pieced geese. 

Once you figure it out you may want to keep on making them.

You could make a whole quilt of Flying Geese...
But I digress.

3.) History

You also get a little history from me

The friendship quilt is a style of antique quilt that is easy to date because people often included a date as well as their signatures. The earliest friendship quilt I've found yet has blocks dated 1839, but there's only one with that date---the sawtooth block above.

 There are a couple of friendship quilts with blocks dated 1840; a few more in 1841.  By 1842 the idea was a fad, a craze that continues to this day.

    This sounds fun Barbars! I have never made a friendship quilt ie, not in a group or for someone else. But saying that, I have made a version of the Sarah Morell quilt - just because I love it!

    What a beautiful block! I have never made a friendship quilt, but I have made an Album block and an Autograph star block for a Civil War quilt I made for my brother-in-law.     Interesting block. I've participated in friendship quilts in my quilt guild. We generally do such a quilt for the outgoing president but last year we did something a little different. Our president had served before so she already had a traditional friendship quilt. It was decided to that we would make a patchwork casserole carrier and have the guild members sign the lining.

I am currently swapping blocks from your 2011 Civil War blocks of the week as well as swapping nine patches with ten other quilters. It is a great way to keep motivated!

    Thanks for the block. For my in-laws 50th anniversary I designed a signature block for all the guest to sign and write a comment on - as a guest book. We had a big snow storm and rescheduled it a week later. Beautifully reminder of the day. (My in-laws were married on the very day that I was born, so have asked that I get it back when they are gone.) Robert, from northern Iowa.

    I have participated in seven quilt alongside on line that I can think of. I also did your Civil War BOW last year and am doing the suffrage one this year. The closest to a friendship quilt was a triangle square quilt I made from traded triangle squares from a project on The Quilt Show. Love your fabrics.

    I organized a Friendship Quilt for my mother-in-law for her 80th birthday. I made a block for each family member with their name and birth date inscribed, and I had each person sign their block. It's a treasure!! One interesting point was that I had each generation with a different color.

    Hi Barbara, Last year i participated in my first friendship block swap. We each had to make 49 signature blocks and we received the same number of blocks in return, all made in civil war fabrics. I have finished piecing the quilt top and now I doing what I love best, quilting it by hand.
    In 1997, during my stay in London, I was most fortunate to visit William Morris' house and I was inspired by his magnificent tapestries and wondrous fabric & wallpaper designs. Your latest William Morris inspired fabrics bring back many wonderful memories of that visit.

    I've done one friendship signature swap, two house swaps and a jar swap. I loved them all! Even if all of the swappers weren't the same skill level, they make a fun quilt in the end. Thanks for the fun! Love the way you cut the corner pieces!

    I have never participated in a Friendship Quilt where evryone signed a block.
    But I have made at least 5 quilts to give to people where we put the name of the group on the label and handed over a card with all the members names.
    And one quilt where all the names of the people who had contributed blocks were put on the label.

    This is my first friendship quilt along. I did made a sigature quilt for my Mom and Dad's 50th annivery and we had a dinner party for them with lots of friends and family and each signed their name on this quilt.     I've never made a friendship quilt at least style-wise. But I've participated in quite a few quilts made for friends by a group of friends all together. Does that count? I think it does. I think we even ended up signing our blocks a couple of times.

    I have made one "friendship" quilt - it was my "President's" quilt where guild members made a block and gave it to me after the year I was guild president. I cherish it!     I think a friendship quilt is the most precious gift one can receive. It will give comfort to fondle the names of loved ones missed.     I have not made a friendship quilt but two online quilty friends and I made a friendship runner. We each picked a block and 1 fabric, sent our finished block and fabric to the others and made a three block runner that we signed. It was great fun and another way to connect.     I have only made 2 friendship quilts -but I gues I should elaborate. It was from a guilda nd a small sect of us quilting enthusiasts got together-a round robin almost.     I was feeling embarrassed that I had never participated in a friendship quilt, but then I read all the previous comments and find that I'm not the only one. I did have a lot of fun a while back when our women's group at church all brought in our sewing machines and sewed little baby gowns for a mission hospital in Africa. I am very excited to see all the designs that everyone is posting for this quilt-along. Thank you so much!

    oops, posted the friendship quilt info on the wrong site! I have made a block for the state guild siggy quilt, years ago. In a second instance. my quilting friends and I each made the Bachelor's Choice block and gave one to each member. We then set the blocks in our own way to finish a wall hanging.     I love Friendship quilts. The latest one I made was for my future daughter -in-law. Everyone signed labels at her bridal shower. I've taken part in about 10 different ones because we give retiring quilt guild presidents a friendship block at the end of their terms. Going to make one for myself too from birthday wishes blocks given to me. Thanks so much for this wonderful blog hop.

    This is my first friendship quilt participation. I just retired after many years as a nurse in hospice care and ICU. I have always been what I call a "wanna be quilter" and now I hope I have time to really quilt. My relaxation & thearpy had been visiting quilt shops and starting my stash plus making a few simple things. I admired your work and just ordered your Civil Was Sampler.     I've made 2 friendship quilts, but I made all the blocks and collected all the signatures/messages and then gave them away to my mom for her 50th birthday and to my son when he was born (with wishes for his future from family and friends written at my baby shower).     I have participated in a number of friendship quilts. Where I work a quilt is given to new babies and retirements. I am the lucky one that gets to put them together and each person that participates gives me a block. it is a lot of work and I imagine I have put together 10 or more over the past few years. Lizzie

    I have only participated in one friendship quilt. It was for a Brit whose husband was stationed here at Ft Hood Tx. They were on heir way back home and we all put a quilt together for her:)

    I have participated in two friendship quilts so far. Both were very fun in the process, and then very, deeply moving as I looked back. One was deeply moving to me because when I pulled it back out again almost a year later, I realized how much stronger the friendships had grown and even someone who had signed the quilt that I felt I didn't really know had become someone that I considered a good friend now looking back. And the second one was a quilt we made for a friend who was battling cancer, she used the quilt during her treatment and now she is healthy, well, and quilting strong!! So these two quilts came to mark very important parts of my life. Thank you!

    I have never been in involved with a friendship quilt with signatures, but I did organize and help with a quilt that was made with students' handprints for a teacher who was moving away. It was a wonderful experience.

    I made one friendship quilt for my niece's wedding. All the Aunts/Uncles/Cousins signed a block for the quilt. I have also been researching the names on a friendship quilt in our Historical Society collection- made in 1893 by a Native American Women's Sewing Circle. I think you would love to see some of the fabrics used in that quilt!

    I have never made a friendship quilt before and look forward to this! I attempted a birthday signature quilt as one of my first projects and it was a bit of a disaster as I learned the value of the right materials for a job are the "right" ones for a good reason! Sharpies were not the right pen to use especially without even attempting to heat set it was a learning experience!

    I Think if I counted right I've made 10 friendship quilts. Many were when I participated in a quilt guild. I love them and just made the top for a wedding quilt this summer for my niece that the blocks will be signed by people that are at the wedding. Such fun! Thanks for the chance to win.

    Made one for Aunt's 90th birthday party. My aunt had a stoke that wiped out her memory before the quilt was finished. Learned the hard way to keep it simple, have a finished top signed, not blocks or pieces,bring extra fabric to replace any mistakes and send it out for quilting right after the event. Wish I'd done that. I bought Morris Apprentice & am making a log cabinet now, so give my place in the system to
    another;-) Fun to read all comments to learn about your followers.

    I made a friendship quilt for our pastor who was retiring. It was a friendship star, and in the center everyone embroidered the name of their favorite Bible verse instead of their own name. It was very much appreciated by the pastor and his wife.

    I haven't participated in any. I am fairly new to quilting even though I am on my second machine. I had a personality conflict with my first machine, to say the least. My husband completely surprised me with my new machine. He left me a note to wash some towels, which I was REALLY annoyed about since we weren't even out of them yet. When I went in the laundry room, my new machine was in there.

    I've never done one but I would like to. well, I made a retiring friend, Bob, a quilt, got the other faculty members to sign a block. The best part is that I told Bob the quilt was a quilt for someone else and had him sign it. However, it wasn't a friendship quilt in the sense that all the blocks were made by me.

    I know you are a quilt historian and I thank you for that. I, too, love history and enjoyed all the information you provided. The earliest friendship quilt in 1839(!) and then to think in just a few years (1842) it had become a fad is outstanding. Loved the old pics; I'd like to know the reasoning behind those HATS! Thanks for the block pattern; love the fussy-cutting you did on the corners.

We have a block a month participation with a drawing at the end of the month for those participating to receive a change at getting all the blocks. I also LOVE the Metropolitan Fair prints and have made a stripy quilt with the jelly roll.

    Thanks for a the great post with all the fun facts. I'm an Army wife and so have participated in many friendship quilts. It seems that whenever a fellow quilter leaves a post, we make her a quilt. As well, when it was my turn to leave, I received one. They also make great presents for departing Commanders and their spouses. If I had to guess, I would say that I've participated in at least 20. I LOVE mine. They are such a treasure to have and a wonderful reminder of past assignments/posts/friends.

    What a fun challenge! I have lost count of how many friendship quilts I have led or participated in - at least 10 for our guild (we do one for the outgoing president); two for a very special member of our guild - celebrating her 80th and now 90th birthday!; 13 as fundraisers for our local PTA with all of the students in the first grade in our town; 4 for friends of my children or my family who have moved; 4 for weddings. I guess I really need some new patterns!

    I have done about 15 friendship quilts but have made many (maybe 30)HAND quilts in which I trace hands of children (in a class or school) or adults (in an office or business) and make squares of fabric depicting their hobbies etc. for comfort quilts......

    I am new to quilting so I have not had the opportunity to participate in a "Friendship" quilt along. But, I thought this would be a wonderful chance to learn, and to enjoy the pretty quilts and start building my pattern collection! Thank you for sharing your designs with all of us.

    Enjoy your blogs and have been following them for just over a year. In the process of finishing Civil War Chronicles and Civil War Journals and will soon start your next BOM. LOVE your fabric and the history you share. A few years back I switched from elaborate cross-stitching and beading work to quilting as a way to relax from systems design work. Only in the last 2 years have I discovered my hobby was a way to make a wide variety of friends. Quilting is no longer a solitary activity of me. I have not made a friendship quilt, but now that my circle of quilting friends is expanding… it may be on the horizon… sharing your blog with my new friends at a monthly Moda University group.

    I have been in 8 or more friendship quilts. We had a group of 6 quilters that would meet once a month at each others house. Once a year we would start a friendship quilt. Nancy P.

    Three friends in our small group pieced and quilted a pink and green quilt for the fourth woman in our group, who died of cancer. She kept it with her in hospice.

    First time for this venture and it looks fun already!

    I have made signature blocks for 3 of our exiting quilt guild Presidents. I also this past year made 80 signature blocks for my niece that was getting married. Instead of a guest book everyone signed a block and I made it into a beautiful quilt for her after the wedding. This year I am our guild President and I am really looking forward to receiving signature blocks from members at the end of the year.
