Friendship Ala Moda
Party
Like It's 1842!
We're
making a friendship quilt here at Moda. You'll recognize the style---blocks in
a sampler of patterns, each with the maker's signature. People call them
album quilts or signature quilts too. They've been a format for social networking since the 1840s.
Here's the agenda for the Quilt Along.
1.) Quilt Patterns
You get a free pattern for a block from all the Moda designers (3 a day)
Today it's me...
And Barb & Alma at Blackbird Designs...
And Basic Grey
They'll be posting sometime on February 18th.
Between now and March 4 you will get 28 different patterns for 9" blocks.
Here's the block we've designed for me.
It's a version of flying geese with a big spot for a signature or inscription.
I made it up in some grays and pinkish reds from my Morris Apprentice collection of reproduction William Morris Company prints. I fussy-cut a square out of the Eden print for the corners.

Try this one if the one above doesn't work.

It finishes to 9" square. The instructions will show you a clever way to make these strip-pieced geese.
Once you figure it out you may want to keep on making them.
You could make a whole quilt of Flying Geese...
But I digress.

3.) History
You also get a little history from me
The
friendship quilt is a style of antique quilt that is easy to date because
people often included a date as well as their signatures. The earliest friendship
quilt I've found yet has blocks dated 1839, but there's only one with that date---the sawtooth block above.
There are a couple of friendship quilts with blocks dated 1840; a few more in 1841. By 1842 the idea was a fad, a craze that continues to this day.

ReplyDeleteThank you for the lovely block pattern. This is my first chance to participate in a friendship block quilt. Your historical facts are always so interesting to read. I would love to win, thanks for the chance!
ReplyDeleteInteresting block. I've participated in friendship quilts in my quilt guild. We generally do such a quilt for the outgoing president but last year we did something a little different. Our president had served before so she already had a traditional friendship quilt. It was decided to that we would make a patchwork casserole carrier and have the guild members sign the lining.
ReplyDeletehello from the uk! I have participated in two friendship quilts. One was through the Internet and the other was at school for a member of staff who was retiring. Really enjoyed both x
ReplyDeleteI am so looking forward to this quilt along. I have loved being involved in quite a few friendship quilts over the years and cherish every quilt made. I am currently swapping blocks from your 2011 Civil War blocks of the week as well as swapping nine patches with ten other quilters. It is a great way to keep motivated!
ReplyDeleteHi! I have participated in 8 friendship quilt projects. All of them were on-line projects. I love your block! I will definitely be downloading these patterns and participating! Thanks so much.
ReplyDeleteRuth
Thanks for the block. For my in-laws 50th anniversary I designed a signature block for all the guest to sign and write a comment on - as a guest book. We had a big snow storm and rescheduled it a week later. Beautifully reminder of the day. (My in-laws were married on the very day that I was born, so have asked that I get it back when they are gone.) Robert, from northern Iowa.
ReplyDeleteI have participated in seven quilt alongside on line that I can think of. I also did your Civil War BOW last year and am doing the suffrage one this year. The closest to a friendship quilt was a triangle square quilt I made from traded triangle squares from a project on The Quilt Show. Love your fabrics.
ReplyDeleteI have participated in making 6 or more friendship quilts. The guild I belonged to would make one for each guild president that was going out of office. I like your block and your new fabric for the give a way. Thanks for the chance to win!
ReplyDeleteMy first signature blocks. Should be fun, you Moda girls are in charge!
ReplyDeleteI organized a Friendship Quilt for my mother-in-law for her 80th birthday. I made a block for each family member with their name and birth date inscribed, and I had each person sign their block. It's a treasure!! One interesting point was that I had each generation with a different color.
ReplyDeleteOur quilt group has done a number of friendship quilts mostly for charity quilts. Thanks for the giveaway.
ReplyDeleteThis will be my first Friendship Quilt and I am so looking forward to it. Thanks for sharing.

ReplyDeleteIn 1997, during my stay in London, I was most fortunate to visit William Morris' house and I was inspired by his magnificent tapestries and wondrous fabric & wallpaper designs. Your latest William Morris inspired fabrics bring back many wonderful memories of that visit.
cheers...Marian in sunny Australia
Hmm, I think I've done 3 or 4..did two siggy swaps with Dear Jane (one is complete & the other still needs assembly) and a couple other online swaps. Thanks for the great giveaway!
ReplyDeleteI've done one friendship signature swap, two house swaps and a jar swap. I loved them all! Even if all of the swappers weren't the same skill level, they make a fun quilt in the end. Thanks for the fun! Love the way you cut the corner pieces!

ReplyDeleteThis is my first friendship quilt along. I did made a sigature quilt for my Mom and Dad's 50th annivery and we had a dinner party for them with lots of friends and family and each signed their name on this quilt. This will be my very first friendship quilt and I'm so excited!
ReplyDeleteI've never made a friendship quilt at least style-wise. But I've participated in quite a few quilts made for friends by a group of friends all together. Does that count? I think it does. I think we even ended up signing our blocks a couple of times.
ReplyDeleteSadly, I've never done a Friendship quilt. I always have thought that a signed quilt would get damaged in the washer, unable to ever read the writing again.
ReplyDeleteLove the block, what fun. This is my first friendship quilt.
ReplyDeleteThis will be my first friendship quilt I have participated in. Thanks for the chance to win your bundle.
ReplyDeleteWith Texas known as 'The Friendship State' it would be only natural for a Texas Quilter like me to have participated in a Friendship Quilt....and I have. SIX of them with friends on the internet from all over the world, from the great state of Texas, and already this year with a fun group of Canadians.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to get started on this one, and would LOVE to win your Collection fom William Morris Co. Thank-you for the opportunity.

ReplyDeletetmcnimsakont@gmail.com
Thanks for the great informative post! I have yet to make a friendship quilt but look forward to gathering all the blocks.
ReplyDeleteI think a friendship quilt is the most precious gift one can receive. It will give comfort to fondle the names of loved ones missed. I have participated in one and I know my name is forever in this world, handed down to generations to come. I love this block and thanks ever-so-much for sharing with us. Love, Mary
ReplyDeleteI have not made a friendship quilt but two online quilty friends and I made a friendship runner. We each picked a block and 1 fabric, sent our finished block and fabric to the others and made a three block runner that we signed. It was great fun and another way to connect. Thanks for the chance to win fabric!
ReplyDeleteThis is my first Friendship quilt, can't wait to get started.
ReplyDeleteWell, I don't have a party hat, but I love the block!
ReplyDeleteLove the block. I have never had a chance to make a friendship quilt. Thanks for the chance to win.

My best friend of 25 years just moved away and I'm really feeling the need for "friendship". This is the perfect time to start a friendship quilt. I'm looking forward to my first, but hopefully not my last, friendship quilt!
ReplyDeleteI've been a part of about 4 different siggy quilt swaps. They are always for a great cause. Love your block!
ReplyDeleteWhat a cool block! I have never been involved in a Friendship Quilt :(. Guess I need to call some friends!!
ReplyDeleteHi Barbara, I love that your block looks so complicated but isn't.
ReplyDeleteI've signed many quilt squares, but only have one that I made myself.
I have participated in at least 6 friendship quilts: one for a wedding gift, two for quilt guild presidents, one for a friend, plus two Home of the Brave Quilts.
ReplyDeleteLiz in Indiana
I have never made a friendship quilt or participated in one. I'm a novice quilter and daren't foister my lack of skills on other people!
ReplyDeleteI think Morris Apprentice is a very fitting fabric for me, considering my blog name!
I have made one friendship quilt. My husband is retired military and we have made many friends all around the country. I sent blocks out to these many friends and then put them together into a quilt.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to start this! It will be my first-ever Friendship block quilt. My guild has hosted groups for this before, but I haven't signed up. Glad to have another opportunity--thanks!
ReplyDeleteConnie
Great post! I've participated in 6 friendship quilts for myself, including one I'm doing now, plus another 7 or 8 for friends with serious illnesses and one guild President's quilt.
ReplyDeleteAnd I've loved every single one of them!
LOVE your fabric line and your block.
Thanks for the opportunity!
I have only made 2 friendship quilts -but I gues I should elaborate. It was from a guilda nd a small sect of us quilting enthusiasts got together-a round robin almost. It was fun but I have always wanted to one for me as a momento with my quilting friends for the sharing and signature blocks. Thanks for the opportunity to be part of your fantastic giveaway
ReplyDeleteThat is a beautiful block and fabric choices. I admit, only one and we just swapped names on a piece of muslim to add to our own quilt, so maybe it is time for me to make them into a quilt.
ReplyDeleteDebbie
I have joined in on two friendship quilts with my quilting buddies and had a blast, plus we wind up with a beautiful quilt!!

ReplyDeleteThis will be my first friendship blocks. Thanks
ReplyDeleteI've made blocks for 12 friendship quilts. My various guilds always made quilts when a member moved out of the area or when a guild president leaves office.
ReplyDeleteLove your block! I used to be in a friendship group and after it broke up, I made another friendship quilt with a few of the girls from the original group. So, I'd estimate my number of friendship quilts to be around 6 or 7. Thanks for the block and giveaway!

ReplyDeleteI'm new to sewing and have never done or participated in making friendship quilts. Thank you for the little bit of history lesson, I love it and thanks for the giveaway.
ReplyDeleteI have never made or seen a friendship quilt. I think this is a great idea for friends or family.
ReplyDeleteI was feeling embarrassed that I had never participated in a friendship quilt, but then I read all the previous comments and find that I'm not the only one. I did have a lot of fun a while back when our women's group at church all brought in our sewing machines and sewed little baby gowns for a mission hospital in Africa. I am very excited to see all the designs that everyone is posting for this quilt-along. Thank you so much!
ReplyDeleteI've never participated in a friendship quilt. I've made alot of charity quilts, though. It's always gratifying to give a quilt to someone in need of comfort. Thanks sew much for this chance to win :-D
ReplyDeleteThis is my first one to paticipate in. Can't wait to get them all done.
ReplyDeleteoops, posted the friendship quilt info on the wrong site! I have made a block for the state guild siggy quilt, years ago. In a second instance. my quilting friends and I each made the Bachelor's Choice block and gave one to each member. We then set the blocks in our own way to finish a wall hanging. The third I made myself and had my quilting buddies sign it for me. The Savery Star. thanks for the new quilt along. Susan
ReplyDeleteI have participated in 2 with quilting friends. Some of the members of the group have moved or passed on, so the signatures are even more special. Love the block!
ReplyDeleteI made a friendship quilt for a wonderful woman from Japan who worked with me. I collected signatures and good wishes from coworkers on fabric. So I know one of my quilts is in Japan.
ReplyDeleteThe sounds is fun, but I have no work on a friendquilt
ReplyDeleteI have never made a friendship quilt :(... might have to be my next one!! Thanks for the chance on the giveaway!!!
ReplyDeleteI love Friendship quilts. The latest one I made was for my future daughter -in-law. Everyone signed labels at her bridal shower. I've taken part in about 10 different ones because we give retiring quilt guild presidents a friendship block at the end of their terms. Going to make one for myself too from birthday wishes blocks given to me. Thanks so much for this wonderful blog hop.
ReplyDeleteSheila
I have never done a friendship quilt yet, but I have one my mother and her friends did. She has passed and I hold it very dear and have it hanging where I can see it every day. I
ReplyDeleteI've participated in about 15 friendship quilts.
ReplyDeleteI have not made a Friendship Quilt with signed blocks, but have participated in a big international swap of small fabric squares, which I made up into a lovely small rainbow quilt. Love those Morris fabrics - his Walthamstow home is just a few miles from here.

ReplyDeleteThanks for the giveaway.

I can't access the block pattern... :( I have the most recent adobe reader. I there anyway you could email it to me? angie2718@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteThis is my first friendship quilt participation. I just retired after many years as a nurse in hospice care and ICU. I have always been what I call a "wanna be quilter" and now I hope I have time to really quilt. My relaxation & thearpy had been visiting quilt shops and starting my stash plus making a few simple things. I admired your work and just ordered your Civil Was Sampler. I hope I am on by way to become a "real quilter". This is a wonderful opportunity. Connie in Wisconsin.
ReplyDeleteI've only participated in one other friendship qal. That's why I am so excited about this one, I know it's going to be a blast! Thanks so much.
ReplyDeleteI've never participated in a Friendship Quilt. Just learning to quilt...a little late in life, but better than never!
ReplyDeleteI've made 2 friendship quilts, but I made all the blocks and collected all the signatures/messages and then gave them away to my mom for her 50th birthday and to my son when he was born (with wishes for his future from family and friends written at my baby shower). Thanks for the chance for the beautiful fabrics! It would be fun to make a friendship quilt with my quilting lady friends.
ReplyDeleteI have participated in a number of friendship quilts. Where I work a quilt is given to new babies and retirements. I am the lucky one that gets to put them together and each person that participates gives me a block. it is a lot of work and I imagine I have put together 10 or more over the past few years. Lizzie
ReplyDeleteI have only participated in one friendship quilt. It was for a Brit whose husband was stationed here at Ft Hood Tx. They were on heir way back home and we all put a quilt together for her:)
ReplyDeleteI did organize a wedding quilt where all the guests signed and left a message:) Guess that would make 2 then:)
I have never participated in any quilt along and I m so excited for this one! Thank you for a great block.
ReplyDeleteI have participated in two friendship quilts so far. Both were very fun in the process, and then very, deeply moving as I looked back. One was deeply moving to me because when I pulled it back out again almost a year later, I realized how much stronger the friendships had grown and even someone who had signed the quilt that I felt I didn't really know had become someone that I considered a good friend now looking back. And the second one was a quilt we made for a friend who was battling cancer, she used the quilt during her treatment and now she is healthy, well, and quilting strong!! So these two quilts came to mark very important parts of my life. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteI have participated in two friendship quilts but both were a long time ago. All had the same block repeated. This looks very intesting in that the blocks will be different, Thanks for the giveaway...I love Morris Tapestry.
ReplyDeleteThis is my first quilt along. I am excited and also learning. I have been listening to the history channel and have learned some facts I did not know about our presidents and have bought a book to read more about "Teddy". Through your information I am learning more about the history of quilts. Thanks for your information.
ReplyDeleteLove your block and all the interesting info and photos. I have participated in only one and have not put the blocks together yet, but it was alot of fun.
ReplyDeleteOh, I LOVE the William Morris fabrics. So beautiful! And I'm so excited to visit all the websites and see the lovely patterns. It's like a treasure hunt.
ReplyDeleteI've never made a friendship quilt before, so I'm really looking forward to this one.
Thank you!
DeAnna
P. S. I so enjoyed reading your post about the 1933 World's Fair Quilt. I hope you find the real one someday. :)
I have never participated in a friendship quilt, but this could be the first one!
ReplyDeleteI've only participated in one other friendship quilt blog swap. Maybe I should try it more often!
ReplyDeleteI have been part of collaborative quilts but not a Friendship Quilt. The Morris Apprentice fabric is wonderful, thanks for the chance to win.
ReplyDeleteI have been part of two Friendship block exchanges - and it was years and years ago - I hardly even remember who some of the gals were! LOL
ReplyDeleteI have never been in involved with a friendship quilt with signatures, but I did organize and help with a quilt that was made with students' handprints for a teacher who was moving away. It was a wonderful experience.

I have never participated in a Friendship quilt but then am a neebie! Thanks for sharing the antique pictures too. Thanks for the opportunity to win such a great giveaway.
ReplyDeleteI made one friendship quilt for my niece's wedding. All the Aunts/Uncles/Cousins signed a block for the quilt. I have also been researching the names on a friendship quilt in our Historical Society collection- made in 1893 by a Native American Women's Sewing Circle. I think you would love to see some of the fabrics used in that quilt!
ReplyDeletei have participated in 15 friendship quilts and am looking forward to doing more
ReplyDeleteLost count on the actual number of friendship quilts I have participated in, the one our guild made for a member who is losing her eyesight has to be my favorite one.
ReplyDeleteI have never made a friendship quilt before and look forward to this! I attempted a birthday signature quilt as one of my first projects and it was a bit of a disaster as I learned the value of the right materials for a job are the "right" ones for a good reason! Sharpies were not the right pen to use especially without even attempting to heat set it was a learning experience!
ReplyDeleteI Think if I counted right I've made 10 friendship quilts. Many were when I participated in a quilt guild. I love them and just made the top for a wedding quilt this summer for my niece that the blocks will be signed by people that are at the wedding. Such fun! Thanks for the chance to win.
ReplyDeleteMary
I'm currently participating in a friendship quilt project, hosted by my quilt guild. The outgoing president always receives these blocks with a common color theme. This year the color is "blue". Thanks for the history lessons in your blog.
ReplyDeleteLike many others I have never made a friendship quilt. I have a special bond with my quilting friends, and not enough time to spend with them. This would be a very special way to keep them near. Thank you for the pattern, the giveaway, and the inspiration! Lori
ReplyDeleteMade one for Aunt's 90th birthday party. My aunt had a stoke that wiped out her memory before the quilt was finished. Learned the hard way to keep it simple, have a finished top signed, not blocks or pieces, bring extra fabric to replace any mistakes and send it out for quilting right after the event. Wish I'd done that. I bought Morris Apprentice & am making a log cabinet now, so give my place in the system to
ReplyDeleteanother;-) Fun to read all comments to learn about your followers.
I've participated in one...
ReplyDeleteI made a friendship quilt for our pastor who was retiring. It was a friendship star, and in the center everyone embroidered the name of their favorite Bible verse instead of their own name. It was very much appreciated by the pastor and his wife.
ReplyDeleteI have participated in the making of 3 friendship quilts through our local quilt guild.
ReplyDeleteI have participated in the making of 3 friendship quilts through our local quilt guild.
ReplyDeleteWhat an interesting block! I like the two color flying geese. I have participated in two baby quilt signature block quilts and quite a few for my quilt guild for retiring presidents. I usually enjoy it more when I make a block of my own choosing in the needed size and colors!
ReplyDeleteI have participated in one - starting today, with your lovely block! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteWow--lots of great info on your post. I have never made a friendship quilt before but would like to.

I made a friendship quilt for my own wedding! Each guest signed a block! Great giveaway! Thanks for the opportunity!
ReplyDeleteI haven't participated in any. I am fairly new to quilting even though I am on my second machine. I had a personality conflict with my first machine, to say the least. My husband completely surprised me with my new machine. He left me a note to wash some towels, which I was REALLY annoyed about since we weren't even out of them yet. When I went in the laundry room, my new machine was in there.
ReplyDeleteI've participated in two friendship quilts. Both friends who were retiring.
ReplyDeleteI've made blocks for quite a few friendship quilts, but don't have even one of the quilts I've finished in my posession.
ReplyDeleteI have only participated in one friendship quilt and as an alternate block I traced the hand of the person who made the signature block. Thanks So much for the great blocks and the chance to win this lovely fabric.
ReplyDeleteWOW!! would love to win. I have never done a friendship quilt. They are all so prety. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI've never done one but I would like to. well, I made a retiring friend, Bob, a quilt, got the other faculty members to sign a block. The best part is that I told Bob the quilt was a quilt for someone else and had him sign it. However, it wasn't a friendship quilt in the sense that all the blocks were made by me.
ReplyDeleteI know you are a quilt historian and I thank you for that. I, too, love history and enjoyed all the information you provided. The earliest friendship quilt in 1839(!) and then to think in just a few years (1842) it had become a fad is outstanding. Loved the old pics; I'd like to know the reasoning behind those HATS! Thanks for the block pattern; love the fussy-cutting you did on the corners.
ReplyDeleteHello. Just wanted to let you know I have participated in 24 Friendship quilt blocks within my guild. We have a block a month participation with a drawing at the end of the month for those participating to receive a change at getting all the blocks. I also LOVE the Metropolitan Fair prints and have made a stripy quilt with the jelly roll.
ReplyDeleteBarbara, Love your blog, of course! I am making friendship/signature quilts for my fellow workers as they retire. 4 so far, and 5 in the works. I work with all men, so there is an extra challenge to keep them masculine! Also making one with ocean waves for a dear friend on a water related committee. Thank you for your block, it's very fun!

I'm new to quilting..and this is my first introduction to a friendship quilt but it sounds absolutely fab. What a fun project and thanks for the opportunity for the giveaway!
ReplyDeleteI'm having a hard time remembering how many friendship quilts that I have participated in, but around 12. I've also made a few QOV with signature blocks.
ReplyDeleteHelen
Our quilt group makes quilts for each of the quilters in the friendship block style. So I've participated in a few...I kind of lost count :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks for a the great post with all the fun facts. I'm an Army wife and so have participated in many friendship quilts. It seems that whenever a fellow quilter leaves a post, we make her a quilt. As well, when it was my turn to leave, I received one. They also make great presents for departing Commanders and their spouses. If I had to guess, I would say that I've participated in at least 20. I LOVE mine. They are such a treasure to have and a wonderful reminder of past assignments/posts/friends.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun challenge! I have lost count of how many friendship quilts I have led or participated in - at least 10 for our guild (we do one for the outgoing president); two for a very special member of our guild - celebrating her 80th and now 90th birthday!; 13 as fundraisers for our local PTA with all of the students in the first grade in our town; 4 for friends of my children or my family who have moved; 4 for weddings. I guess I really need some new patterns!
ReplyDeleteI have done about 15 friendship quilts but have made many (maybe 30)HAND quilts in which I trace hands of children (in a class or school) or adults (in an office or business) and make squares of fabric depicting their hobbies etc. for comfort quilts......
ReplyDeletelove your block, never done a friendship quilt before, Elinborg D. Lár. in Iceland.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy reading your blog (via google reader), and the idea of a 'a strangely fair but mysterious criterion' made me smile. I have contributed to one friendship quilt--everyone was asked to contribute a tree block (pattern was provided) in specific colors.
ReplyDeleteThis is my first friendship quilt along. I love your Morris Apprentice collection, already made a doll quilt for my granddaughter using a mini charm pack. Appreciate your generosity.
ReplyDeleteGosh, Barbara, it would take awhile for me to remember all the Friendship quilts I've particippated in. I'm guessing about eight. The first one was during the Bicentennial in 1976! Thanks for the great pattern and giveaway.
ReplyDeleteI have never made a friendship quilt, this sounds like the most fun ever.
ReplyDeleteI have never participated in a friendship quilt.
ReplyDeleteNever ever.
Think I have missed out on something!
No Friendship quilts for me.
ReplyDeleteHi Barbara:
ReplyDeleteI have probably participated in more than a dozen friendship quilts. I love the giving (and the receiving) of something from the heart.
This is my first friendship quilt.
ReplyDeleteSounds like fun!
I am new to quilting so I have not had the opportunity to participate in a "Friendship" quilt along. But, I thought this would be a wonderful chance to learn, and to enjoy the pretty quilts and start building my pattern collection! Thank you for sharing your designs with all of us.
ReplyDeleteEllen
p.s. I'm sure your fans, especially me, would like to see more of your William Morris designs!!
I have never participated in a friendship block, but it looks like it would be fun! I will definitely be making this quilt. Thanks!

Enjoy your blogs and have been following them for just over a year. In the process of finishing Civil War Chronicles and Civil War Journals and will soon start your next BOM. LOVE your fabric and the history you share. A few years back I switched from elaborate cross-stitching and beading work to quilting as a way to relax from systems design work. Only in the last 2 years have I discovered my hobby was a way to make a wide variety of friends. Quilting is no longer a solitary activity of me. I have not made a friendship quilt, but now that my circle of quilting friends is expanding… it may be on the horizon… sharing your blog with my new friends at a monthly Moda University group.
ReplyDeleteI've never made a friendship quilt, but I love the idea and name. Nice that the Moda design will have flying geese. I love their look.
ReplyDeleteI have been in 8 or more friendship quilts. We had a group of 6 quilters that would meet once a month at each others house. Once a year we would start a friendship quilt. Nancy P.
ReplyDeleteThank you for participating in this! I've only participated in one friendship quilt, back in 2000, when the Y2K quilts were being made.
ReplyDeleteI have not participated in a friendship quilt. Maybe someday.
ReplyDeleteThree friends in our small group pieced and quilted a pink and green quilt for the fourth woman in our group, who died of cancer. She kept it with her in hospice.
ReplyDeleteFirst time for this venture and it looks fun already!
Barb
I have made signature blocks for 3 of our exiting quilt guild Presidents. I also this past year made 80 signature blocks for my niece that was getting married. Instead of a guest book everyone signed a block and I made it into a beautiful quilt for her after the wedding. This year I am our guild President and I am really looking forward to receiving signature blocks from members at the end of the year.
ReplyDeleteI'm looking forward to this blog hop. I've never made a friendship quilt before. Thanks for the chance to win!
