Third in our series of nine dogtooth-style appliques, posted on the first

day of each month here.

Becky & Jeanne are doing the dogtooth slash & turn method for

their spiky points.

This month's pattern requires two sheets. Above using the dogtooth technique.

Below using conventional template applique.

Print the pattern sheet on an 8-1/2" x 11" sheet of paper. Check the inch square for accuracy and adjust if necessary.

The block is unusual, drawn from a top that looks to be late-19th century, related in its 4 + 4 symmetries to the popular Mexican Rose design. The pattern was probably named during the war between the U.S. and Mexico in the 1840s that ended in much southwestern land being annexed to the United States. California with its Mexican colonial culture was a large territorial gain.

"Americans," those living in the eastern states, learned a lot about cactuses during that war. 

Christmas cactuses and prickly pear were among the houseplants inspired by returning soldiers. The spiky botany is well rendered in dogtooth applique.
