A Bride's Quilt for Jane Burden

A Bride's Quilt for Jane Burden by Jude Liebmann
and members of the Kilmore Quilters
in Australia

Quilted by Rhonda Coates

I was intrigued by the name as I have been reading a lot about
Jane Burden and her husband William Morris lately.

On the label Jude says:
"When a member of Kilmore Quilters likes a quilt or pattern, they ask if there are other members who would like to take the quilt journey with them and this quilt was such a project. the idea was make the applique in the centre your own.
"This is an adaptation of the Eyre Bride's Quilt. The pattern was adapted by Kilmore Quilters for a member project. The centre and block placement are my own design."

Jane Burden Morris as La Pia de' Tolomei, 1868, by Dante Gabriel Rossetti.
Collection of the Helen F. Spencer Museum of Art at the University of Kansas.

I do believe this is the only Rossetti painting in Kansas. It's in the collection of the Spencer Museum of Art at the University of Kansas. It's my favorite thing at the art museum (and that's saying a lot because they have hundreds of quilts.)
Read about it here:

Jane's story is fascinating. Her daughter's lover George Bernard Shaw captured a little of it in his play Pygmalion.

I also notice this eye-catching quilt is pieced of many of the prints I've done for
Moda in my various William Morris collections.

So here's to Jane.
And to Jude.

If you go to the Moda website you will see my latest William-Morris-inspired fabric collection is scheduled for April, 2016 delivery.

Read Jan Marsh's Jane and May Morris: A Biographical Story, 1839-1938 to find out more about Jane, her wedding and her marriage.

  3. So happy to have come across your website. Not only am I a very excited beginner to quilting (as of this year) but I have long had a passion for Art and Crafts Movement design and Pre-Raphaelite art, particularly William Morris designs. I also love all the history of quilting on your website and look forwarding to looking through your blog posts.
