Denver Art Museum Exhibit

Indiana Wreath by Charlotte Jane Whitehill, 1930, Emporia, Kansas
Collection of the Denver Art Museum

The Denver Art Museum is showing 20 of their quilts in First Glance - Second Look: Quilts from the Collection.

The exhibit opened last month and will be up until March 22, 2015.
Included is Charlotte Whitehill's version of the Indiana Wreath medallion. Their photo shows the terrific quilting that the Emporia community produced in the 1930s.

Several expert applique artists in Emporia and elsewhere were inspired by this photograph in Marie Webster's 1915 book Quilts: Their Story and How to Make Them. The antique quilt is dated 1858 under the basket.
Karla Menaugh and I were inspired by the borders to add a detail to the border of our Emporia Rose sampler.

Here's the little bouquet we added at the bottom. The version
above is by Ina Mae Carney, the one below by Cindy Korb.

The Denver Art Museum has a catalog of their exhibit available for $10.95.
