What's In A Name?

An exhibit of signature quilts from the collection of the International Quilt Study Center and Museum in Lincoln, Nebraska.

The staff and students did a lot of research on some of their signed quilts following the paths indicated by the names, places and dates.

Here are a few detail shots I took of inscriptions and blocks.

"This catalog is about the names of ordinary, but mostly forgotten, people inscribed on the quilts in the exhibition of the same name. Using a combination of genealogical and historical research, a team of IQSCM staff, volunteer genealogists and affiliated scholars have rediscovered the stories and sketched the outlines of individual’s lives from long ago. In some cases, the research led us to living descendants who shared real photographs and stories handed down in their families. Names inscribed on these quilts reveal networks of relationships and shared experiences and values such as friendship, honor, service, community and memory."
