Moda Friendship Quilt Along Day 1

Friendship Ala Moda

Party Like It's 1842!

We're making a friendship quilt here at Moda. You'll recognize the style---blocks in a sampler of patterns, each with the maker's signature. People call them album quilts or signature quilts too. They've been a format for social networking since the 1840s.

Here's the agenda for the Quilt Along.

1.) Quilt Patterns

You get a free pattern for a block from all the Moda designers (3 a day)
Today it's me...
And Barb & Alma at Blackbird Designs...
And Basic Grey

They'll be posting sometime on February 18th.

Between now and March 4 you will get 28 different patterns for 9" blocks.

Here's the block we've designed for me.
It's a version of flying geese with a big spot for a signature or inscription.

I made it up in some grays and pinkish reds from my Morris Apprentice collection of reproduction William Morris Company prints. I fussy-cut a square out of the Eden print for the corners.

Here's a better link:

Try this one if the one above doesn't work.
https://workspaces.acrobat.com/app.html#d=Rev2WJXyZkFveMFuzJhCPw

It finishes to 9" square. The instructions will show you a clever way to make these strip-pieced geese.

Once you figure it out you may want to keep on making them.

You could make a whole quilt of Flying Geese...
But I digress.

2.) Free Stuff

My Give-Away is over. Cassie A won the fat quarter pack.

3.) History

You also get a little history from me

The friendship quilt is a style of antique quilt that is easy to date because people often included a date as well as their signatures. The earliest friendship quilt I've found yet has blocks dated 1839, but there's only one with that date---the sawtooth block above.

There are a couple of friendship quilts with blocks dated 1840; a few more in 1841.  By 1842 the idea was a fad, a craze that continues to this day.

  3. I have never made a friendship quilt before, but just finished a wallhanging with Morris Apprentice and loved how you used the fabric in your block. Now I can't wait to start my own!

  4. Is it sad that this quilter has never even HEARD of a friendship quilt? I've never made one but it sure looks fun!

  5. Thanks for the tutorial! I have never participated in a friendship quilt, but would love to sometime!

  6. I have been thinking about making a friendship quilt for the last two years, and in fact, it is two years today since I last saw the friend I would like to make one for. I was new to patchwork and quilting then so I wasn't brave enough to give it a go.

I'm taking this as a sign to do it. I look forward to joining in.

I might even see if I can draw anyone in to make one with me. I don't know many people locally who sew, so I guess this will be a bold new step!

  10. Too many to count! Must be at least 20-25. It is one of my favorite things to do. The most memorable is a quilt my little quilt group made for a dear member dying of ovarian cancer. Each of our blocks was a self-portrait. I had the honor of quilting it. She had it for the last year and a half of her life. We miss her so much.

  11. I have made 2 friendship quilts as wedding gifts for my children. Blocks were brought to the reception and all guests were asked to sign and leave a message. My girls and their husbands loved them.
Neat new block, thanks for the giveaway.

  15. Oh, this is going to be a fun hop. I'm so excited. Thanks for the history, too. I have 2 quilts from friendship things. One is blocks, but the other is a raggy style border quilt. We had a list, and sent our first block to the next person. They added a border, and sent it on. It was fun to see what each person added.

  16. I like your block, especially done in the Morris Apprentice fabrics. I like the two colours in the flying geese. Thanks for all the interesting history of these quilts. I've never made a friendship quilt or even participated in signing one. Thanks for a wonderful giveaway.

  18. I've never made a Friendship Quilt. Do I need a lot of friends?? : )
I do like the concept though I don't have a lot of quilting friends, that's why I follow quilting blogs like yours! Thanks for the giveaway.

  19. I am housebound with a disabled teen, so am not able to get out and join a guild - so I have no 'friends' to do a signature quilt with! I love the Civil War era and its quilting traditions though. And of course I love the fabric!

    ReplyDelete
  20. The last friendship quilt I participated in (actually started and completed the process since I first got the boss's approval and later stitched down the binding) was for a co-worker whose home burned to the ground. She and her hubby lost literally everything but the clothes they were wearing and their car. We thought her new home deserved a king-size friendship quilt and we received enough blocks for the quilt plus matching shams! We also raised nearly $2,000 in 48 hours to help her at the very beginning, to purchase clothing, shoes - all those little things you don't give a second thought to, until you don't have them.

  21. I read on another blog that you were starting a quilt-a-long today and I wanted to join. I almost backed out when I saw your block though. I always dread doing flying geese, but will try your method and see if I can do it. Your block is especially pretty.

I have made one signature quilt with some online friends where they either made a block and sent it to me or signed a piece of cloth and I made a block around it. My mil had a beautiful signature quilt made for her mother and I always wanted it but she gave it to someone else. Since then though, I have always wanted a signature quilt. Too bad this one won't have any signatures on it.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I haven't participated in any signature quilts, but I plan to.

  23. I have participated in a few, but making my own is going to be fun. Thanks for letting us be involved in this fun few weeks of friendship.

  36. Hi Barbara, I've never participated in a friendship quilt before. I am recently taking up a love of quilting and learning my way as I go. It has been so much fun to learn new patterns and see projects come together. I look forward to collecting all the patterns to make a beautiful quilt during the Moda Frienship Quilt Along. And, I have to add a little thank you for making such beautiful fabrics. I am using your blues and chocolates from your Metropolitan Fair line to create a lovely king size quilt for our bed. Quite an undertaking for a beginner, but I love a challenge.

  58. I have made one friendship signature quilt for a retiring friend and participated in the blocks for a number of other quilts. I have always been intrigued since I saw a one in the Smithsonian collection.

  59. At first I thought I'd never participated in a friendship quilt, but then I remembered the quilt blocks that I'd made for exiting quilt guild presidents, at least six now, and the blocks that my circle did for birthdays, eleven of those. Then there were the blocks that some of our circle ladies swapped that we had to sign and date so that would add at least seven more to my count. WOW! I've left my mark more than I thought!

Thanks for doing this! - Tiff

  73. Love signature blocks/quilts. I spent several hours this weekend cataloging the signatures on an older quilt. I was at the Osage County historial society picking up materials to make block "Order # 11" for a quilt they want to make for a civil war rememberance next year, when I spied the beautiful signature quilt.. we started talking about it and the emploee was saying how the curator had always wanted to document the signatures, but they had never found the time... and we walked through the building looking at various things when I remembered the smart phone in my pocket......so I said, can we unfold the signature quilt and lay out somewhere flat.....sure she said. So I took about 50 pics/ no flash with phone and spent Sunday evening cataloging names only a few were questionable (shadows/ one fuzzy picture, oops) but am half done there's about 400 names I think. The Curator will be really suprised when I send her the file since she wasn't there the other day! I put it into a spreadsheet so that each name has the same location as quilt, and I can make her an alpha list too with references for the row/column location. Was fun I can see why you like signature blocks, took very little time really, and I was glad to do it. The names are on the white snowball type areas of the hummimgbird/periwinkle blocks, all hand pieced. They are very small ball area is about 3.5". Pretty quilt, never used, the embroidered signatures are not worn like floss normally would be. The lady told me the story she heard was the spaces were sold for thirty cents... That raised them a nice price for a fundraiser quilt many many years ago. I didn't ask as many details about quilt as I should have but will when I go back so that I can complete the documentaion. Have a great time with the friendship quilt a-long.... am hopping on to the others while I'm here.....

I've particiapted in several friendship block exchanges, but the most important friendship quilt is the one made for me when I was sick. Each participant wrote a little something with their signature on the center of an Ohio Star. Everytime I cuddled under that quilt I was reminded of my wonderful friends

  85. I have participated in two Friendship Quilt projects - The first was for my wedding, instead of a guest book, we had friends and family sign a block and second with a number of my fellow living historians, we all created blocks from scraps of our reproduction clothing. Both our true treasures and full of memories.

  86. I have been part of two friendship quilts. One was a round robin and the other a row-by-row. Everyone had made their first block or row which set the theme of their quilt. I want to finish it, because it would be a good reference for fabrics. The other where I made an unfrotunate choice of background colour (a dull pink)so the blocks have sat in my cupboard for years.

  128. I have participated in two signature quilts. The second one began when I met a lady at the AQS convention, who is in the Jo Stitchers group online. We contacted each other through the group and met at the convention. When I met her, we exchanged signature blocks using Kindred Spirits quilt block pattern. This quilt is very special to me. I live in Maryville, TN and enjoy the quilting community that surrounds me. Lana

  136. Having been a member of two quilt guilds for many years, I've lost count of the friendship blocks I've made. Outgoing presidents, longtime members who move away, members who celebrate "big" birthdays, all get signed blocks.

  137. I have participated in one guild friendship quilt and a round robin quilt with my best quilting buddies - which I truly consider a friendship quilt!

  138. Seems like I make two types of quilts for people at work -baby quilts and retirement quilts. I enjoy making both. So thanks for the history about the friendship quilts. I also enjoyed the post about the eBay quilt. I had heard an abbreviated version of the story but I think that yours was more accurate.

  139. Dear Barbara:

I love your blog. I read them as you wrote them. Thank you very much for all that you contribute to the world. I am quilting and piecing by hand because it is calming. I have never join any friendship quilting group before. I am very shy and I have no fortune to know anyone where I am at all. I am only a minority where I am in this country since 1990. A few people who quilts very well know me, but my ability is not yet up to par so I am not invited yet. ^_^- Panee

  155. I've participated in four friendship quilts for out-going guild presidents. I made a friendship/family memory quilt for my parents 65th Anniversary with blocks from each child, grandchild, and great - grandchild! The hardest part of that one was getting everyone to send me their blocks since we live from FL to CA and I'm in the middle (OK). My folks actually made it to 70 years before my Dad passed away last February. Mom treasures that quilt, and re-reads each block when she feels blue. She turned 90 this month!!

  157. Oh my... how am I to remember when I've been quilting since the early 80's! But I remember the last one which was a block for your Civil War friendship quilt. My favorite was one I initiated for a gal who was moving to another state... a bookcase quilt with special, to her, remembrances on the shelves. We recreated some wonderful things including the Coast Guard ship Eagle at the place of honor on the top shelf. There have been many, many more friendship quilts I've been involved in, in some way, and it's always fun.
