It's National Corduroy Appreciation Day
Washington City 1808
"We mean to exhibit ourselves here on New Year’s day in [domestically manufactured cloth]...I must get you to examine the manufactures of Philadelphia and send me something. I think it probable they make there some of those thick, ribbed, or corded cottons which are now so much used for pantaloons &c...”
President Thomas Jefferson
Thomas Jefferson in corduroy pants! No photos survive. But here are some corduroy quilts from online auctions and sales.
This corduroy and velvet four-patch was sold at Cowan's Auctions
With a coordinating pillow
Check out some other blogs appreciating corduroy today in the list at Nifty Quilts
Most people won't attempt this design in a crisp percale,
much less napped fabrics.
Knots and ties always add a nice texture.
This one's for sale at Slotin Folk Art.
And this one at Laura Fisher's
If only Betsey Johnson had been dressing Thomas Jefferson. Check out this link.

I made a quilt recently using flannel with a bit of corduroy and it worked out
great.
Cool! I did a blog post today about corduroy in honor of Corduroy Appreciation Day and included a picture of my very first quilt (1979) which was bordered in corduroy.
What a fabulous collection of quilts and lots of lovely links to even more... Thank you!!
Great show! Thank you for adding the historical perspective to corduroy. Now I am totally inspired to make lots more corduroy quilts! So glad you could join us.
I love scrappy quilts made from old clothes. I am collecting my husbands pants now, so plan on doing one with jeans, cords and some khakis.

More inspiration! Makes me want to make another one! Thanks for sharing...I enjoy reading your blog.
Great inspirational corduroy quilt! And thanks for your fabulous links! I can't wait to check them all out. Happy (belated) Corduroy Day!
I wouldn't dare try to sew a pattern in corduroy, it would be a disaster in my hands. Many of the quilts of the Gee's Bend quilters were made entirely or in part from corduroy because there was a fabric mill or factory near by where they got off-cuts and left over yardage of the corduroy made for, I believe, Sears. Because of the use of corduroy, those quilts look different when you see them in person than when on the printed page.
Is there also National Sateen Day, Nation Velvet Day, National Toile Day etc.? Or does corduroy get its own day because it's an American invention?
