The Old Fashioned Calicoes concept goes beyond patchwork skirts in the 1970s.
People have fond memories of calico clothing---when a lot of 79 cent yardage and a little cotton lace made the perfect bride's maid gown. Above the reproduction.
Samantha, who writes:
"This isn't patchwork, but it does show me and my big dolly in calico in 1975!! My grandmother made her for me. The dress she wears is probably mine- or one we could "share!"
Leila (top left) sent several photos including this one in 1985 when...
"we all entered a very awkward phase. Scary. My dress is hard to see as I am in the back, but it was a red "striped" calico. I still have the dress. My oldest daughter thinks it is beautiful and has worn it to church many times. Seriously, she loves it and was sad when I told her it was getting to small to wear any more."
The dress today, outgrown by a second generation
No stripes in the repro line.
Kim sent a photo of her family when she was ten in 1971...
"exactly 40 yrs ago (as I'm 50 now) I'm the girl in the longer ponytails-my younger sis is in the glasses. We were sporting our Mother daughter peasant skirts made from the calico fabs we picked out!!!!!! Hope you enjoy them!!! Have a 'peasant' Monday!!!"
Those reds were hot in the 1970s
Sara
"This is not patchwork, but it is a photo of me in a dress I made out of fabric with little rabbits all over it. 1974! I think you call this fabric hopsacking; anyway it's heavier than a calico cotton. The dress had an empire waist and probably a ruffle at the bottom, and little puff sleeves. Yum!"
No bunnies, but lotsa blue repros.
Lyn sent this photo of a retro find at a London antique mall last year. She thinks it's mid 1980s. I don't know if it counts....it's sort of more tasteful than what we have been talking about.
Chair by Becky
1968
"I've always been a fool for sewing just about anything. In this case, upholstery samples to cover a red leather chair than had been spray painted white. Lots of planning went into sewing these together on my Singer 301A (same machine I still use). Once I had sewn together large sections, my sweet father-in-law (at the time) did a wonderful job of covering the chair. I was sorta his assistant. This picture was taken Christmas 1968. I was so proud of it at the time, and I can't remember what happened to it. . ."

What a surprise to see more old pictures, including my chair!
Thanks for taking us back and for giving us a new line of calico!
So much fun to see not only old calico prints, but the vintage photos and to read all the old memories of quilters.
Lots of fun prints, I need to go through my old ones and see if I have any. I have some from the 80's still, so not sure if I have any older than that.
Debbie
I made the big dolly for my two girls and my two nieces. then 20 years later made one for the "new" niece. Now 10 years after that, the granddaughter has 3 to chose from to play with. Wish I still had the dresses(and the shape) from the '70's.
I've really enjoyed seeing these photos from the 70's!!
Hello Barbara, I have enjoyed your posts with the old calico prints....thankyou for posting the pic of my much loved jacket...Warm Regards, Lyn
