BLOG HOP-MY TURN

Lissa's asked us lots of questions for the Moda Blog Hop.

What's Your Favorite Fair Food?

Answer: It's the pie. Every year my sewing group has Pie Night and we make about 30 pies for a local fair.

Pie with my name on it.
Is it blueberry or blackberry?
Seamsters rolling pie crust

Seamsters peeling peaches

It's a fine-tuned assembly line. I get to peel and chop fruit and empty peels into the compost periodically. Up the line there are better cooks who are pie decorators, pie crust makers, pie crust rollers. Not my skill areas.
What's your  guilty pleasure?
Chocolate. I eat it for breakfast. A cup of coffee and a few bite-size pieces.
What's on your bucket list?
Go to Jane Austen's house in Chawton.
What inspires your work?
The past---the way people lived, the way fabrics looked and how they used those fabrics.
Tell us about the time you entered in a fair.
Seamsters Union
The Sun Sets on Sunbonnet Sue
1979

Well--- there was the time the same sewing group entered The Sun Sets on Sunbonnet Sue in the Kansas State Fair and they gave it a blue ribbon (that was back when there were very few entries in the late 1970s so there was only one group entry in the category.) But the judge thought it so SCANDALOUS she displayed it face down---with the ribbon. It made the front page of the Topeka paper.
DottieB

Tell us about your pet.
I'm so glad you asked. Dorothy Barker (DottieB for short) is a pound puppy, a strange mix of dachshund and something that can leap tall buildings in a single bound. I'd have taken a photo of her with the chicken potholder below but she would have shredded it.

Give us a recipe.
I don't know why you'd want a recipe from a woman who is in charge of emptying the compost at a pie-making event but here's one for some bar cookies, easy to make.

UPDATE & CORRECTION: Well you can see why I have to sit at the end of the table where I can't mess up the pies. I have been making these bar cookies for years and using the exact recipe as above and never noticed that in the ingredients it says baking powder and in the instructions soda.  I have to assume that it is baking powder since I usually get all the ingredients out ahead of time so I don't forget anything. I need a technical editor. Use baking powder.

How about a fair-themed pattern?
I love these retro chicken potholders. They'd be a good 4-H sewing project as they teach the basics of 3-D sewing.

I made several in different fabrics. The center chicken is from my Old-Fashioned Calicoes collection coming to shops in October. It is a 1960s reproduction, perfect for the retro kitchen.

Click here for a PDF with a pattern and templates for the RetroChick potholder.

See more about Old Fashioned Calicoes by clicking here:
http://www.unitednotions.com/fcc_old_fashioned_calicoes.pdf

Did you see Aneela Hoey's post yesterday?
And don't forget to check Bonnie Olvason's tomorrow.

Here's the list for the next two weeks
September 20th Bonnie from Cotton Way
September 22nd Deb Strain
September 27th Kate Spain

The cooks at the fair in 1990

UPDATE: I didn't mention the give-away but I decided ahead of time to give away some precuts to the first commenter named Barbara so Cupcake_Barb is the winner!  Comment if you like but she's getting the precuts! And thanks for the comments. I'm glad to hear so many people remember the chickens.

My group has a Pie Day too!! But with a very different approach. We each bring a pie and then we all eat them. Savory, sweet, fruit. It is such a good time that it has turned into an event and when we have visitors from out of town they request Pie Day and we oblige. Very Happily.
I have a chicken potholder my Grammy made in the 60's love it.

Dottie B is so cute, I love my 2 rescue puppies Abbie & Mickey.

CaraQuilts said...

Hehehe chickens, knowing me they'd end up headless, either from messing up the pattern or because I have this tendency to burn my pot holders, silly stove wants the knobs to turn on the burners it thinks they should instead of the ones I MEAN to turn on.
I saw another "scandalous" Sunbonnet Sue that had Sue, and I think Sam, in various lingerie and ummm other activities of a shocking nature. Funniest thing ever.

I was just checking and see I missed posting here the other day. oops. I was here because I had saved the yummy recipe which was one of my most favorite things my Mom used to make every Christmas. Thank you for that recipe.

And the Sunbonnet quilt is hillarious. I know there are websites devoted to killing off Sunbonnet Sue. I ran across them a few years back while searching out machine embroidery designs. I had to laugh that the judge turned it face down though. How funny. lol

I LOVE the chicken potholders. Adorable. I am going to need to make some of those. And the quilt shop I am currently taking lessons from has the perfect fabric too. I just saw it Tuesday night while at class. It's a Butter and Cheddar fabric line and she had about 3-4 of the prints from that line left although I don't recall now who's it was. Even better is that she's having a huge anniversary sale today and that fabric is alrady half price and today it's buy 3 get a 4th free. Hmmm I might be out shopping today. Thank you for such a cute pattern.
