Every December I get to go to San Francisco before Christmas. I do my rounds of design, décor and darn cute. The first cute stop is the windows at Macy’s on Union Square. They build fanciful habitats that are populated with adoptable critters by the San Francisco SPCA.
The crowds line up at night to watch them snooze. Inside Macy’s they have a room with available pets. The woman in charge told me they’d been doing it for 24 years.
And a picture of three sisters in matching polka-dotted tulle outfits writing letters to Santa in the Holiday Lane area.
Then down Maiden Lane to Britex Fabrics, four floors of fiber.
I was glad to find that All Saints, a London boutique, has opened a San Francisco branch right next door to Britex. Just as in London, their façade is covered with old sewing machines.
Inside the store is clothing for chromophobics who think gray is the new black.
But the sewing machines were shiny.
Anthropologie always has the wackiest decorations. Here's a tree of yarn balls with a tree of mittens on the left. I can see I need some giant stryofoam cones.
This year the feature is a patchwork of sweater parts on
a) Trees
b) A miniature house
c) Taxidermy deer armatures

I usually walk around glitter-dazed, making unintelligible notes for next year’s tree. Every November my friend Georgann and I decorate a tree to be auctioned for a local children’s charity. This year our theme was pink and white and Japanese cherry blossoms.
with kimono-clad bunnies from Urban Outfitters.
I’m thinking red Chinese fans for next year,

Thanks for sharing your Christmas cuteness sightings. Now I want to go to San Francisco. I haven't been there for years. I especially want to go to Britex again. I've spent hours there looking at all the fabric.
An All Saints just opened in Seattle. I was charmed by all the sewing machines in the window, but one peak inside and I decided to keep walking.
Your Japanese inspired tree is very charming. Hope you find inspiration for next year's tree.
What a surprise to get a look at the sights in San Francisco. I love the pets in the stores.
Your cherry blossom tree is cute and precious and makes me giggle.
Now I have to go finish sewing pajamas for four grandchildren - all the same fabrics, won't they look cute on Christmas morning!
Nice sense of humor here....Seasons Greetings!
I adored seeing the decorations from all the stores. I think that is one thing I miss the most. I haven't gone to stores with window front decorations in years, here they most have moved their businesses to malls. I remember watching the train makes their rounds in the windows downtown, the winds blowing off the lake and waiting in line to see the store Santa.
You are stronger than I coming away with only socks...I would have Socks but it would be a kitten. (A visit to the vet last week and I came back with a kitten named Dobby...going along with the socks theme...)
There's a Britex here in New York, in SoHo. I imagine someone has to dust those beautiful shiny sewing machines every day! Thanks for the tour.
It's wonderful that Macy's does this every year. Thanks for the insight into Anthropologie and their decorating for the holidays. The closest store for me is three hours away, so this was fun "window shopping".
Have a Happy Christmas, and thanks again for all of the informative blog posts this past year. I learn so much from you.
Oh, what a treat to see the Big City Christmas decorations from my arm chair on the island! When I was a kid it was such a treat to take the bus or drive in to Akron to see the Xmas window decorations. Malls don't do it like the old fashion "downtown" stores do. Love the styrafoam patchwork trees! Hmmmm...
What a fun tour and a fun vacation for you. Thanks for sharing.
